Ageism & Malpractice:  Rampant in Healthcare  (and the Courts) While no one enjoys spending time in a hospital bed, recent research has revealed what many already suspected: for the elderly, hospitals are not only unpleasant, but can be downright dangerous and life-threatening. It has been reported that hospital staff can fail to feed older patients properly, get them out of bed enough, or control their pain adequately. Providers frequently restrict their movements by tethering them to beds with oxygen tanks and IV poles. Doctors have even been reported to subject them to unnecessary procedures and prescribe redundant or potentially harmful medications. Caregivers can deprive them of sleep by placing them in noisy wards or checking vital signs at all hours of the night. Even more troubling, research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has exposed that one-third of patients over 70 years old and half of all patients over 85 leave the hospital in much worse condition than when they entered; if they leave at all. Moreover, upon discharge from the hospital, elderly patients frequently suffer from disabilities that make them unable to complete the tasks of daily living-disabilities that they didn't have before they were admitted. The magnitude of this problem is highlighted by the fact that patients over 65 already make up more than one-third of all discharges from U.S. hospitals. Furthermore, nearly 13 million seniors are admitted to U.S. hospitals each year and these numbers will only grow. Task Force For Justice

GARDEN CITY, N.Y., Aug. 15, 2017 -- The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that the abuse of powerful prescription painkillers, opioids, costs the economy over $78.5 billion dollars annually and growing.  Billions in problems require social injustice law firms to fight back against manufacturer enablers, seeking solutions.

Salmonella Poisoning Scare

News You Need To Know: Last week, we informed you of contaminated food stores on Long Island. Now, we have learned of a salmonella outbreak linked to papayas from Mexico in our area. Suffolk health officials say the state has made them aware of three cases in Suffolk County and eight cases in Nassau County.  Twelve people have been hospitalized in our area, and one death has been reported, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Investigators are working to learn where the contamination occurred in the supply chain," the CDC said. According to the CDC, the salmonella outbreak has now sickened 109 people in 16 states and is responsible for one death (which was in NYC). Symptoms of salmonella can start 10 to 72 hours after a person is infected and include diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. This can last about four to seven days, and most people can recover without being hospitalized. However, those who develop severe diarrhea may need to be be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Babies, children, the elderly or those who have compromised immune systems are most at risk for severe cases of illness. The CDC has recommended that consumers not eat this type of papaya, restaurants should not serve it, and stores should not sell it. If you are not sure if your papayas are infected, it is suggested that they are thrown away.  When in doubt, throw it out!
